Melbourne Rebels Drop Out of Super Rugby Competition

Australian Super Rugby team Melbourne Rebels has faced financial difficulties leading to their removal from the competition. The Rebels have been under voluntary administration since January, and efforts to secure a consortium to take over the club’s license from 2025 have been unsuccessful.

Background

The Rebels, founded in 2011, have made it to the playoffs for the first time in their history, currently holding the seventh position in the table.

Rugby Australia’s Decision

Rugby Australia declined the proposal from the consortium citing lack of financial viability. Despite significant investments by Rugby Australia over the years, the Rebels have struggled to achieve financial sustainability.

The consortium failed to provide evidence supporting their projected funding of 18 million Australian dollars. The Rebels had debts exceeding 23 million dollars, including a substantial amount owed to the tax office.

Future Plans

Rugby Australia emphasized the need to act in the best interests of the game and its stakeholders. They are focused on providing support to the affected staff and players while planning for the upcoming 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The Rebels expressed gratitude to their fans for their unwavering support during a challenging year. They are proud of their achievements in the face of adversity and are gearing up for their first-ever finals campaign.
